Anbox Android in a Box

The world order has many pitfalls. One of them is this obsession with smartphone technology. It seems as if it is nearly impossible to access websites on the Internet without a smartphone mobile telephone number.

I actually do not use dumb devices also known as smart devices. This includes mobile telephones. However, there are a few websites I access that require a mobile telephone number.

I refuse to go purchase a smartphone just for two Internet websites. When I still used Microsoft operating systems, I installed a free Google Android emulator called BlueStacks. I could install software applications from the Google Play store, as if I was using a Google Android dumb device.

Now, I exclusively use Linux and therefore need a work around to still be able to download and install a couple of Google Play store applications, so that I can access a couple of security-paranoid websites. There are quite a few Google Android emulators and programs that will function on Linux distributions. One of them is called Anbox Android in a box.

Anbox is free and I believe it is an open-source software program. Technically, Anbox is not an emulator. However, it allows you to install Google Android applications using your computer hardware.

I am going to show you how to quickly install Anbox Android in a box on your Linux Debian derivation distribution operating system. You will want to open up a terminal window. Then either login into your root account using the su command or use the sudo command, along with the installation command, to prompt you for your root account password.

su root

sudo apt-get install anbox

On Linux Debian derivation distribution operating systems, you use the apt-get tool to install and remove applications. You will want to enter one of these commands below to install Anbox on your Debian distribution derivation Linux operating system. I currently use MX Linux version 19.4 operating system.

apt-get install anbox

sudo apt-get install anbox

If you are already logged into your root account, you do not need to use sudo with the apt-get install command. If Anbox is available on your Debian derivation Linux distribution operating system, you will see a list of application dependencies. Then you will be asked to enter in Y for yes or N for no to install Anbox or to not install Anbox.

If Anbox is not available on your Debian derivation Linux distribution operating system, you will be notified that Anbox is not found or available. You might need to perform some Internet searches to find out how to manually add a repository for your specific Linux distribution, so that you can install Anbox. MX Linux version 19.4 already has Anbox Android in a box software available.

I did not have to or need to manually add a software repository. If all goes well with your installation of Anbox, you will see some download, unpacking, installing, etc. messages. As long as you do not view any error messages, you should be taken to your command prompt.

Now you can open up Anbox. On this computer with MX Linux version 19.4 Debian derivation distribution of the Linux operating system, I found Anbox in the "Accessories" folder in the programs menu. Click on the "Applications" system icon in the lower left-hand corner.

Look for Anbox in the "Accessories" option. Anbox might not be located in that same menu option on your Linux Debian derivation distribution operating system. You can use your applications search tool to try to find the location of the Anbox Android in a box software program start menu icon.

Anbox would not actually work on MX Linux version 19.4 operating system. I would choose the Anbox program and would just see a "Starting" message in the Anbox window. Then that window would disappear.

After performing some Internet searches, I narrowed down the most likely culprit. This computer has an older dual core processor that does not have built in support for some specific hardware technologies that Anbox requires. I will need to try installing Anbox on a newer computer or within a virtual box virtual machine operating system.

However, this computer microprocessor has built in virtualization support. I even verified it was enabled in the basic input output system, to no avail. I have been planning on purchasing a mini computer.

Now is the time to kill multiple birds with one stone. Hopefully, Anbox will function correctly on your Debian Linux derivation distribution operating system. If you are using Linux distributions based on Red Hat, you can use the yum tool instead.

For example, Fedora, Suse, etc are red hat based Linux operating sytems. You can just type in this command below to see if Anbox is available. If not, you might need to perform some Internet searches, to find instructions on how to add an Anbox Android in a box software repository for your specific Linux distribution operating system.

yum install anbox

Anbox Android in a Box Video Transcript

00:01

there is a

00:04

program for linux that allows you to

00:06

install and

00:09

use

00:10

google android applications

00:14

i found one

00:16

for mx linux

00:18

called and box am bio x and i'm going to

00:21

quickly show you how to install it this

00:22

requires command line

00:25

so in a terminal window now i'm using mx

00:27

linux 19.3

00:30

so

00:30

just caveat emptor

00:33

your linux distribution may or may not

00:36

have an box in the

00:38

operating system repository i was

00:41

fortunate enough

00:43

that mx linux which is a debian

00:46

derivation distribution

00:50

includes and box in the repository all

00:53

you have to do is type in this command

00:56

up at the top i've already installed it

00:59

so in a command line you're going to

01:01

want

01:02

and require root now you could sudo sudo

01:06

space and then the command i will

01:08

include

01:09

instructions in the blog post that i

01:11

will be writing about a hundred years

01:13

from now

01:14

you know what i'm saying but for now all

01:16

the instructions it's really easy so you

01:18

type in

01:19

once you

01:20

log in as root or once you type in

01:23

s-u-d-o excuse me s u yeah d o space and

01:27

then the command which will

01:29

ask you to type in your root command

01:31

then it's apt get

01:33

apt-get

01:35

space install space and box and box

01:40

apt-get is the tool the utility that i

01:44

think on all

01:46

debian

01:48

derivation distribution linux operating

01:50

systems

01:53

that tool allows you to

01:56

install and remove software on your

01:59

linux

02:00

operating system so then you would just

02:02

hit enter and you're going to see a

02:04

package list

02:06

it first shows you what packages if you

02:09

notice here and then where my cursor is

02:11

highlighted it asks you do you want to

02:13

continue and you have to type in y for

02:16

yes

02:17

if you type in n for no it does not

02:20

install anything but i wanted to let you

02:22

know that there are additional packages

02:25

and there are suggested and they're

02:26

recommended

02:27

and then

02:29

the so the additional packages are

02:31

required for andbox to function

02:35

the suggested or recommended maybe just

02:38

features

02:39

but just to let you know that there are

02:41

some additional dependencies some

02:43

software packages that are required and

02:46

some that are

02:47

well recommended or suggested but

02:50

you know what i'm saying then you'll see

02:52

a list that depends on your internet

02:54

connection

02:56

how much data

02:58

really not that much

03:00

and then eventually you'll see this as

03:04

long as you don't see any errors if you

03:06

see what is similar

03:08

selecting preparing

03:12

and then unpacking selecting preparing

03:13

unpacking and then as long as they all

03:15

download correctly as long as you don't

03:18

get any error messages and then you're

03:20

going to see some

03:22

symbolic link creation

03:24

and then processing triggers

03:27

there i'm saying

03:29

and as long as there are no failed

03:33

dependencies or no field downloads or

03:35

there are no funky errors and it takes

03:37

you back to the command prompt the root

03:39

prompt

03:41

you should be good to go and then what

03:43

you will do

03:44

is depending on the linux distribution

03:48

that you are using

03:50

you

03:51

would look for the and box icon on mx

03:55

linux

03:56

let me see where is it located

04:00

let's see

04:01

maybe under

04:03

uh internet where is it actually located

04:11

accessories oh

04:13

on mx linux 19.3 it added it to the

04:17

accessories so when you click on the

04:21

menu icon and then it opens up your

04:26

list of programs it's under accessories

04:29

so on your distribution it may not get

04:32

added to your accessories but there's an

04:34

and box android and a box icon with an

04:37

android

04:38

icon

04:40

listen you know

04:42

so you can tell it's an android

04:45

which i don't even use google android

04:48

i don't use google androids i don't use

04:50

smartphones i don't use apple iphones

04:53

either i don't use any of those dumb

04:55

devices i mean smartphones however the

04:58

system is so ridiculous that almost now

05:01

it's all i wouldn't say it's impossible

05:03

but

05:04

there's really there's a couple of

05:06

programs that i need access to on an

05:08

android but i don't want to use

05:10

an android i'm done with that garbage

05:12

all right i digress back to this video

05:14

anything further so just look for an box

05:16

or you can also type in an blx in the

05:19

search tool for your

05:21

programs on mx linux it has a search

05:24

tool at the bottom when you click on the

05:26

menu button which is in the lower left

05:29

hand corner

05:30

or wherever it is on configured on your

05:33

computer other distributions i'm just

05:35

you know try to use your search box

05:38

or look for the icon then open it my on

05:42

i'll be honest it doesn't work yet

05:45

[Laughter]

05:46

but i just want to make sure that

05:49

i don't waste time

05:50

you know what i'm saying i try not to

05:52

waste time if i

05:53

you know what i'm saying

05:55

time is of the most valuable to me so i

05:58

decided to make this video anyways

06:01

you'll open up and box on my mx linux

06:04

19.3 it just says starting and then

06:07

that's it so i have to check out the log

06:09

files i have no idea why it's all good

06:12

linux is not perfect i know you clowns

06:14

that use micro craft micro ship micro

06:17

slop wind blows and you apple fanboys

06:20

and you microprep or excuse me microsoft

06:23

fanboys you think that both of those

06:26

garbage operating systems have no

06:27

problems wrong

06:29

and vice versa you think that mx linux

06:31

is just a disaster at linux why should

06:34

you say linux in general is not perfect

06:38

it never will be

06:41

humans develop operating systems for

06:44

sakes duh

06:49

now you know how to install ambox

06:51

hopefully it's in your operating system

06:53

repository and then you just tap get oh

06:56

here's another tip if you're using not

07:00

that beyond derivation distributions if

07:02

you're using fedora or susie you would

07:05

type in yum

07:06

yum install and box you may have to

07:09

perform some internet searches

07:13

you know but you could just literally go

07:14

in to a command line and type it in and

07:17

see if it's there

07:19

which is what i did if it's not

07:21

in a repository it'll tell you it'll say

07:24

handbox not found you may have to

07:26

perform some internet searches you may

07:28

have to manually add a repository which

07:30

i'm not going to discuss in this video

07:32

adios

07:34

and good luck with micro crap win blows

07:37

11.

07:37

[Laughter]

07:39

oh and good luck with any future apple

07:43

you know quagmire

07:45

you know operating systems
