Windows Performance Options – How to Speed up Your Windows PC

Your computer is a desktop with Windows XP. One of your computer experts gave you some suggestions which seemed to work fine for a few days. Now your computer is getting slower every day.

You could click a mouse, go for coffee, and it might have completed a task by time you get back. This is getting very frustrating. What can you suggest?

You typed msconfig and disabled all items at startup. You ran CCleaner, defrag, and ran a malware scan. You can run both chkdsk and sfc scans in a command prompt.

Type “sfc /scannow” without quotes into a command prompt window. You may need your Windows XP CD. Also, you can type “chkdsk /f /r” without quotes into a command prompt.

Type Y at a volume is in use message. A chkdsks scan will be scheduled and then reboot your computer. Make sure that you don’t have more than one real time anti virus and or malware software running at same time.

If you haven’t done so already, you can boot your computer into Windows safe mode with networking and see if your computer is still slow. Power on that computer and immediately start tapping your F8 key until an advanced boot options menu opens. Choose “Safe mode with networking” from that menu.

Please click your “Start” button, then choose “Run…”. Type in “cmd” without quotes in a run box. A black command prompt window will open.

Did you run both a chkdsk and sfc scan? If so, then please boot that computer into safe mode. Power on that computer and immediately start tapping your F8 key until an advanced boot options menu opens.

Select “Safe mode” from that menu. See if it still takes 10 minutes to boot windows. Please boot your computer into windows safe mode with networking and perform a full malwarebytes scan.

If you don’t run that scan in safe mode, it may not remove any remaining malware. If MalwareBytes doesn’t not remove objects that are causing those error messages, then run a Combofix scan. If you have more than one anti virus installed ie. Avast, AVG, Mcafee, Kaspersky, Symantec, Norton, etc. then only keep one installed.

Also, make sure to have only one firewall enabled or installed. You can uninstall your antivirus or disable it, then perform that Combofix scan. Sometimes antivirus software conflicts with malware scans.

It is recommended to disable your antivirus when running malware scans or remove your antivirus software if it still conflicts after disabling it. After that Combofix scan is completed then reinstall your antivirus.
