Disk Usage Analyzer Tool - For Linux

Another information technology problemo in the world order. This time my hard drive filled up and almost all of my disk space was being used without my knowledge. An application by the name of LBRY desktop client used up around sixty gigabytes of disk space.

Anyways, I was able to track down the culprit by using a tool already installed in MX Linux which is a Debian derivation Linux distribution. This tool is named appropriately Disk Usage Analyzer. This tool I think is a default package when you install MX Linux operating system.

When you first open up this computer software application, you will notice a "Scan Folder" button in the top left corner. This will allow you to browse your Linux computer hardware and choose a folder that you want this tool to scan. Disk Usage Analyzer helps you analyze the disk usage of your hard drive.

I think this tool may or may not work with compact disc, digital versatile disc, universal serial bus drives, secure digital cards, etc. In MX Linux my home folder was listed at the top. Also, my three hard drives were listed.

You can choose your home folder and any of your disc drives listed. When you choose a device or location by clicking on it, this disk usage analyzer computer software program, will begin scanning your location or hard drive of choice. This program uses color coded graphs to help you analyze and or diagnose your hard disk usage.

White means little to no disk usage. Red means that that folder, location, hard drive, etc. is being heavily used. Disk usage analyzer shows your file folders on the left hand side of this computer program.

The graphs are shown on the right hand side. You can choose between a "Rings Chart" or "Treemap Chart" on the right hand side graphs. There are small icons on the bottom of the right hand side.

On the left hand side of this disk usage analyzer tool, you can click on a folder to highlight it. There are small arrows to the left of each folder, that when clicked on, will expand and show sub folders. On the left hand side you click on a location in one of the "Rings Chart" or "Treemap Chart" to browse your file folders.

Also, if you hover your mouse over these charts, this program will display the folder name and how much disk space is being used. The left hand side has a four columns labeled "Folder", "Size", "Contents", and "Modified". You can sort each individual column by clicking on each tab.

The "Size" tab column displays how much disk space is being used per folder. You can keep browsing each folder by exanding them until you find the folder and or file that is causing your problem. This tool helped my diagnose the fact that LBRY desktop software application literally filled up my hard drive.

You can obviously just use this tool to keep any eye, so to speak, on your hard drive usage. With this tool I was able to find out which folder LBRY application was storing over twenty thousand files that eventually filled up my hard drive. I deleted these files in a command line terminal window and solved my problem.

Disk Usage Analyzer Tool For Linux - Video Transcript

00:07

disk usage analyzer i recorded a recent

00:10

video pertaining to mx linux cleanup and

00:12

mx linux cleanup

00:14

has a option to use disk usage

00:18

analyzer

00:20

now i'm using mx linux which is a

00:23

debian derivation linux distribution

00:27

it was installed by default

00:31

i do not know if this program

00:34

is available for all distributions of

00:36

linux but perhaps the debian derivations

00:39

you can go to your start and then

00:41

programs and look for disk usage

00:44

analyzer if your linux distribution has

00:47

a search utility you just type in

00:50

disk usage analyzer and look for it you

00:53

may also be able to install it but this

00:55

is not an installation video

00:58

as you can see on screen it's open you

01:01

just

01:02

open up disk usage analyzer and you

01:04

should see a screen similar to this if

01:06

you look up in the upper left hand

01:08

corner there is a scan folder button

01:11

click on that and it will allow you to

01:14

browse your

01:16

hard drive or

01:18

if you have multiple hard drives you

01:19

should be able to choose your

01:21

hard drive of choice that you want to

01:23

use this tool for so basically disks

01:27

usage analyzer is self-explanatory

01:31

hence the term disk usage analyzer it

01:34

just allows you to find out how much

01:37

disk space is being used

01:40

it it has graphical

01:43

color codes

01:46

it will tell you and then if you and

01:48

then i'm going to demonstrate kind of

01:49

how to use it

01:52

i'm assuming that if you have a

01:54

universal serial bus flash drive

01:57

connected to your computer

01:59

it will show up i do not have a

02:01

universal serial bus flash drive

02:04

connected but i'm assuming it should

02:06

detect it

02:08

and i think it will it may also detect a

02:13

let's see it may or may not detect like

02:16

a cd-rom driver or dvd drive although i

02:19

don't know why you would

02:21

you know i don't i'm not sure what you

02:23

could do although well if it was a

02:25

re-writable a rewritable anyways

02:29

i do have a

02:31

dvd

02:33

drive and it's not listed so i'm not a

02:35

hundred percent sure if it supports

02:38

cd-rom compact disk read-only memory or

02:41

even compact disk rewritable or dvd

02:44

rewritable or dvd

02:46

read-only memory i'm not sure all right

02:49

so what you would do then is either use

02:51

the scan folder tool or you could also

02:54

select your hard drive that you want to

02:57

analyze

02:59

so i'm going to choose the home folder

03:02

and that is going to show me a graphical

03:05

interface

03:07

now these are color coded if you notice

03:10

and then the red is

03:13

alert alert alert red just means that

03:15

these folders

03:17

are

03:18

using quite a bit more memory than

03:22

orange and then what even yellow and

03:25

green

03:28

and then on the left hand side it shows

03:31

you a list of folders and it they are

03:33

color coded white

03:35

basically means very little

03:38

and

03:40

data

03:41

but that those folders do exist and if

03:44

you notice there's a arrow

03:47

kind of a right arrow

03:49

if you click on that it will expand that

03:52

folder now you'll notice some folders

03:55

that have a dot config

03:58

in linux

03:59

a folder that is named with a dot before

04:02

the name of the folder for example dot

04:05

config

04:06

that

04:06

signifies that that folder is

04:10

a hidden system folder

04:13

i'm not can you hide other folders i'm

04:15

not sure about that one

04:17

linux has some system folders that are

04:19

hidden and that makes logical sense

04:21

because you do not necessarily want to

04:22

delete them and you may not want to

04:25

access them so

04:27

for example

04:28

what is it thunar is a file manager in

04:31

linux

04:32

by default that

04:34

file manager program

04:37

all hidden folders are hidden

04:40

you have to enable it

04:42

now this tool i'm not sure why it shows

04:44

them

04:46

is that because in my thundar are saying

04:47

i don't think it has anything to do with

04:49

tsunar but i'm not a hundred percent

04:53

it does show you hidden folders so

04:54

that's a caveat inventory here's a tip

04:57

and i'm going to you know use adult

04:59

language because i do not believe in

05:00

censorship

05:02

just be careful when you around

05:03

with system files and especially hidden

05:06

system files because they can cause a

05:08

problem you know i'm saying all right

05:10

there's my warning for the at least one

05:12

warning in this video now if you notice

05:14

the user folder which is slash home

05:17

slash user

05:18

that is the user account that i'm

05:20

actually logged into on this mx linux

05:23

dabion distribution derivation

05:27

it's red that tells me that what i'm not

05:30

sure what the metrics are if the

05:33

folder or hard disk is 50

05:36

or more full

05:39

being used then does the graphic turn

05:42

red i'm not 100 sure but it is a warning

05:45

sign

05:46

that's red now

05:49

and that could be

05:50

you know i have some data now and it

05:52

will tell you the size the contents the

05:55

ma the modified date

05:57

i think you could probably click on

06:00

yes you can click on these

06:03

separate tabs and it will sort them

06:06

so now i sorted it to

06:08

the least

06:11

to

06:12

greatest

06:13

and then i can click on it again and

06:15

it'll show from greatest to least

06:18

so

06:19

the user folder slash home size user is

06:21

using 6.4 gigabytes

06:24

and that is considered red although the

06:27

hard i know you're gonna laugh i don't

06:28

give a

06:29

[Laughter]

06:30

this is an old hard drive that still

06:32

works

06:33

it's only 80 gigabytes

06:35

but it's only the hard drive for my

06:37

operating system i have multiple other

06:39

hard drives installed for my important

06:41

data well here's a possible gold tip

06:45

to me it does not matter necessarily

06:47

what operating system microcrap

06:49

microship micro

06:52

soft wind blows operating system or

06:54

apple mac and crap operating system

06:57

you may want to only

07:00

use your default hard drive that the

07:03

operating system is installed for only

07:05

for the operating system if you have any

07:08

really important data that you

07:09

absolutely cannot lose or if you lose

07:12

it's going to cause a quagmire in your

07:14

life account information

07:17

maybe you have important files whatever

07:19

you maybe you have a business and you

07:22

cannot lose certain data

07:24

here's a

07:26

recommended tip

07:32

have an external hard drive it does not

07:34

necessarily matter it could be a

07:36

universal serial bus it could be a

07:39

external universal zero bus drive or

07:42

excuse me or a flash drive or maybe a

07:44

sata drive

07:46

or a

07:49

ssd drive

07:52

your important data place that on that

07:54

other drive that is separate just in

07:56

case your operating system

07:59

i'm at the eight minute mark

08:02

becomes corrupted or fails

08:05

you know i'm saying

08:07

that is my tip

08:09

you know what i'm saying

08:11

but it's certainly up to you

08:13

all right

08:14

now your ex your second hard drive might

08:16

fail too but my point is that if that

08:19

hard drive fails it has your data your

08:22

operating system would still function

08:25

and vice versa you know i'm saying if

08:27

your

08:28

secondary drive fails excuse me if your

08:31

operating system drive fails you'll

08:33

still have your important data anyways

08:36

and then here's another quick lecture

08:39

i don't care what operating system

08:40

you're using google android chromebook

08:43

mac and crap

08:45

os

08:46

wind blows always back up your data

08:49

always back up your data always back up

08:51

your data because you just never know

08:53

when you're going to run into a problem

08:54

all right

08:55

and the this the all that aforementioned

08:58

details do

09:00

have something to do with this uses

09:01

analyzer because this user analyzer will

09:03

help you analyze

09:05

why your hard drive is filling up like

09:07

in this example here 6.4 gigabytes

09:11

now

09:13

recently i recorded a video pertaining

09:15

to lbry also known as libre also known

09:18

as library also known as odyssey

09:21

their client

09:22

software program

09:24

unbeknownst to me i had no idea all of a

09:27

sudden one day i noticed using this tool

09:30

because i noticed my computer was acting

09:32

flaky

09:33

it was slower and also i was getting

09:36

warnings about you know running out of

09:38

disk space and i was completely

09:39

perplexed

09:40

i was thinking how is that possible

09:44

i don't i only have my operating system

09:46

and a few programs on this you know 80

09:48

gigabyte hard drive well i used disk

09:51

uses analyzer

09:53

and i found out that that

09:55

program library desktop client

10:00

uses blob files i think when you use

10:02

that client to view video content

10:06

it saves these blob files and it does

10:09

not clean itself up it does not clean up

10:11

those files they just keep accumulating

10:15

and they can be quite large a lot of

10:17

them are two megabytes per file

10:20

and you can have thousands what did i

10:22

have i think i had over twenty thousand

10:24

of those blog files and it eventually

10:26

filled up my hard disk space to the

10:29

point that i couldn't

10:30

i couldn't save any other data and so i

10:34

use this tool and i tracked it down so

10:36

here's a quick demonstration and i need

10:38

to run

10:39

now what you would do is you would click

10:41

on one of these folders

10:43

and then

10:44

if it's red it's warning you that it's

10:46

using a lot of disk space

10:49

you know what i'm saying and then you

10:51

would just keep doing that keep

10:53

go down each folder

10:55

each directory

10:58

until you note and then if you hover

11:01

over these

11:05

folders in this what this is kind of

11:08

like a pie chart

11:10

i'm not sure if my encoder will capture

11:12

this or not when i clicked on this

11:15

partial circle half circle right here

11:18

which is android studio i actually

11:20

downloaded android studio to try to

11:22

learn how to use that that's a another

11:25

that could be a future

11:26

video i do plan on recording video

11:29

pertaining to android studio and how you

11:31

can install it

11:32

it allows you to

11:34

anyways i don't want to digress about

11:35

that that's a future possible video

11:37

possibly it says downloads folder is 3.5

11:41

gigabytes so it can help you diagnose

11:44

what folder or what files is using a lot

11:48

of data now android studio is using 1.8

11:50

gigabytes plugins

11:54

1.3 gigabytes android and then it just

11:57

keeps filtering down

11:58

that is exactly

12:00

how i use this tool to diagnose the fact

12:03

that the library desktop client software

12:06

kept filling up my hard disk up to the

12:09

point that

12:11

it became full

12:13

and how many how much was it

12:15

i don't know 50 gigabytes 60 gigabytes

12:18

whatever whatever the number was all i

12:20

did was i went in and cleaned up that

12:23

directory so that's what you would do

12:25

is once you use this tool then keep

12:29

going down directory until you find the

12:31

culprit it could be a major directory it

12:33

could be the slash home user slash

12:35

downloads you have a lot of movies

12:38

videos that are filling up or like in my

12:40

scenario you have a

12:43

program unbeknownst to you that is out

12:45

of control

12:46

and saving all kinds of files or log

12:49

files or whatever you know what i'm

12:50

saying or data files

12:55

it could be a

12:57

folder that's way down the directory

13:00

tree or it could just be you know maybe

13:03

one

13:03

i don't it shouldn't be the root but it

13:06

could be slash home user

13:08

or like in

13:10

you know the scenario slash home slash

13:12

downloads so that's that's how you use

13:14

this now i think you can i think you can

13:16

click on the chart over here and it will

13:18

browse too so that that's how you use

13:21

this tool

13:23

disk usage analyzer adios
