Computer Equipment Recycling – Worth The Time and Effort?

Is computer equipment recycling worth your time and effort? Originally, I was not going to write this blog post, but then I had second thoughts. As a part time computer repair technician with my own business, I started recycling computer equipment a few years ago.

I am just a small recycler at this point. However, I normally receive computer equipment that is in relatively good condition. I try to resell any computer equipment that I receive, that is obviously functional and not missing any parts.

I generally receive items such as desktop computers, laptop computers, liquid crystal display monitors, printers, and cables. I do NOT accept old cathode ray tube computer monitors and televisions. Also, on occasion I receive liquid crystal display televisions.

Most printers I receive do NOT work at all or have some type of problemw with them. Normally, I do NOT even try reselling printers, as they are not very valuable. All you have to do is browse the free section of Craigslist and your bound to find free printers.

As of the date of this blog post creation, I sell all personal computers that are Pentium 4 or newer. Also, I resell older Macintosh computers ie. G5’s. Generally, Macintosh hardware retains more of its value as they age, compared to personal computers.

If a Microsoft Windows certificate of authenticity sticker is attached to a computer then I load whatever operating system that license is good for. If personal computers are missing certificate of authenticity stickers, usually I install Linux operating systems on them. Macintosh computers, I install whatever the newest Apple Macintosh OS X is compatible with that particular hardware.

Overall, I would say that computer equipment recycling is worth my time and effort. I have recycled computer equipment from non-profits and small businesses. Actually, I have made a decent profit off of reselling pre-owned computer equipment.

I never charge a fee for drop off or pickup of computer equipment. I generally require at least 10 items or more for pickup. Since I do NOT own a truck then I end up renting a Uhaul truck.

However, I am still able to receive a nice profit for my time and labor, as well as the expense of renting a truck. You might be surprised how large of a demand there actually is for pre-owned computer equipment.

Small Business Accounting – Software GnuCash 2.6.19

As a small business owner I have used exclusively a small business accounting software titled GnuCash, for many years. GnuCash is free and open source accounting software. Version 2.6.19 is available.

GnuCash supports Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10, Apple Macintosh Intel as well as PowerPC, Linux, Sun Solaris, and Berkeley Software Distribution operating systems. I have used GnuCash on both Linux and Windows operating systems. GnuCash is both individual and small business accounting software.

There is no web based interface that I am aware of. Also, you cannot have multiple users on a network access the same GnuCash database at the same time. However, you can install multiple instances of GnuCash and point them to the same database, just as long as one person at a time makes changes.

GnuCash is easy to backup and restore. You just save the QIF files. You can import this database into another installation.

If you lose this QIF database your pretty much fucked. You can download the most recent version, along with older versions from this GnuCash 2.6.19 small business accounting software static link. GnuCash features these principles:

* double entry accounting system
* stock, bond, & mutual fund accounting
* small business accounting software
* reports and graphs
* qif, ofx, and hbci importation
* transaction matching verification
* schedule transactions
* financial calculators
* online banking

GnuCash is a double entry accounting system, with a general ledger and chart of accounts. I have used it to help me file my federal and state income taxes. I have used this software to track stock trades.

This free small business accounting software will track most individual and business expenses. You can even create invoices. Also, you can create graphical reports to track expenses, revenues, etc.

I highly recommend this software to track your individual money. Finally, I have used this software before to keep track of my small business money.

How to Make Money With CryptoCurrency – by Using MinerGate

I am going to walk you through how to make money with cryptocurrency by using MinerGate. is a legitimate crypto currency miner. Crypto currencies are created by hash transactions.

This type of currency is NOT like printing pieces of paper like the United States Federal Reserve does. There have been bitcoin and other crypto currency miners since this type of money system was created. However, for whatever reason some people frown upon crypto mining.

If you support crypto currencies, then you can help to contribute to this possible new economy by mining crypto currencies. Also, you can actually make money by using either your hard drive, computers’ central processing unit(s), and even graphical processing unit(s). My first attempt at trying to mine crypto currency was with Nicehash.

However, their mining software did not detect either my CPU or GPU. I am using computer hardware that is not brand new. I then found MinerGate and their software successfully detected the central processing unit.

Minergate claims that most older hardware is supported. However, some older graphics processing units may not process fast enough to mine cryptocurrency. Minergate software is free to download and use.

This software supports Microsoft Windows 7 or newer, Apple Macintosh 10.9 Mavericks or newer, and Linux Ubuntu 16.04 or newer operating systems. MinerGate also supports Fedora Linux 25 or newer operating system. Also, you can mine cryptocurrency with a command line tool Claymore.

You may not become a millionaire over night, but you may be able to make some extra money. What you want to do is download Minergate to all computers that you want to mine cryptocurrency with. You will need to create a Minergate account first.

You will then log into Minergate from each computer with the Minergate client. There are two ways to mine crypto currency with Minergate. You can use the Smart Miner or just Miner tools.

Smart Miner will automatically choose which currency to mine based upon profitability. You can certainly use the standard miner tool and mine which ever currency Minergate supports. Another important point is that there are two different types of payment models that Minergate uses.

Pay Per Last N Shares and Pay Per Share. PPLNS charges 1% while PPS charges 1.5%. You may want to use PPLNS since it charges less.

However, I recommend you study on your own and come up with what suites you best. Once you login to the Minergate client software, you click on either Smart Miner or Miner. If you choose Miner you will have to choose which currencies to mine manually.

Minergate allows you to choose how many cores to dedicate to mining crypto currency. For example I have a quad core computer that I am using. I select the drop down next to a currency under “CPU Mining”.

You will see “CPU Cores”. I can choose to dedicate either 1, 2, 3 or 4 cores on my quad core computer. I recommend that if you are going to use this same computer for other tasks that you leave one core for those tasks.

You can then dedicate 3 cores for crypto currency data mining. I have two machines set to 3 cores and was still able to use these computers like I normally do. You can certainly dedicate all 4 cores if you are not using this computer.

A dual core machine would only detect 2 cores that you could use. A six core machine would show 6 cores that you could dedicate and so on. Once you have picked how many cores to crypto currency mine with then you click on the “Start mining” arrow next to the currency you have picked to mine.

One other important caveat, some crypto currencies might not be very profitable or no longer being used or supported. You do NOT necessarily want to mine crypto currency that nobody is using. However, I recommend that you study each crypto currency on your own so that you make the right decision for your best interests.

If you select the Smart Miner tab, all you have to do is choose how many cores to dedicate to crypto currency mining and then click on a “Start smart mining” button. You can always pause the smart mining. Smart mining will choose the currencies that get mined for you.

You can install the Minergate client on multiple computers. I do NOT know if there is a limit to how many computers you mine from. However, each computer that is mining will show up as a “worker” in the Minergate dashboard.

I highly recommend you get familiar with the dashboard. You can convert your crypto currency coins via the dashboard by selling your coins. Also, you can trade your coins for different crypto currencies.

Keep in mind the afore mentioned services require fees. You get a free private wallet with Minergate. However, you may want to get a more public wallet like what Coinbase offers.

This is so that you can transfer your money to perhaps a banking institution checking or savings account. These decisions are entirely up to you. These are all the currencies that you can mine with Minergate as of the time of this blog post creation:

* zcash
* bitcoin gold
* ethereum
* ethereum classic
* bitcoin
* litecoin
* bytecoin
* monero
* digitalnote
* aeon coin
* fantomcoin
* quazarcoin
* monetaverde
* dashcoin
* infinium-8

Finally, you want to secure your Minergate, Coinbase, etc. credentials. Anyone that has access to this information can transfer your coins else where.

Install Linux Mint From USB – on Dell Inspiron 530

I have decided to try out Linux Mint for the very first time. I am going to go through the steps involved to install Linux Mint from USB. Universal Serial Bus is normally faster than Digital Versatile Disc. You will need a spare computer and USB flash drive.

You then need to download Linux Mint from the link above. Currently there are four different variations of Linux Mint 18.3 that you can install.

* Cinnamon
* Mate
* Xfce

There are x86 32 bit and x64 64 bit versions available for download. I choose to install Linux Mint 18.3 Xfce because I have used this window manager before and it is quite lightweight compared the other three window managers. Once you download the .iso file then you will need to burn it to either DVD or flash it to USB.

You will need a program like Rufus or Etcher. I was not able to flash successfully a Linux Mint 18.3 USB drive with Rufus so I used Etcher instead. Etcher is recommended on Linux Mint’s website.

Now once your flash drive is ready, then you can attach it to a USB port on your computer. Any laptop or desktop computer will work. I would recommend a computer with at least 1 gigahertz processor, 1 megabytes Random Access Memory, and 20 gigabytes hard drive space.

Also, recommended is to connect your computer to the Internet before starting the install. You do NOT have to have Internet connection to complete the install. Another tip is that you can test Linux Mint 18.3 on your hardware before installing.

The USB flash drive boots a demonstration version of Linux Mint 18.3. On my Dell Inspiron 530 I had to make sure that the Basic Input Output System detected the USB flash drive. Also, I made certain that I enabled “Removable Media” as a boot choice.

On Dell computers you can press F2 to enter the BIOS and F12 to enter a boot menu. This boot menu allows you to choose what device to boot from. Your computer might detect this USB flash drive as a USB HDD.

This is normal and you would select this device to boot from. Once you boot off the Linux Mint 18.3 media, you will be logged into a desktop. You can test Linux Mint 18.3.

Double click on an installation icon on the desktop to begin the installation. You can accept the default settings, which is what I recommend if you are new to Linux. You will be asked to choose your language, keyboard type and city location.

Then you will be asked to choose your type of installation. I recommend that you choose the top one which is choosen by default. All of the partition settings will be chosen for you.

You do NOT need to know how to partition using Gparted in order to get Linux Mint installed and working. However, you can choose to encrypt your hard drive, configure Logical Volume Management and even choose a custom install. I have been using different Linux distributions for over 15 years now and I rarely fuck with partitioning, logical volume management, encryption, and custom installs.

Finally, you will be asked to enter in a name, username, password, verify password, and computer name. You do NOT need to enter in a name. You must enter in a username, password, and computer name I think.

You can change your password later or even blank it. You can also choose to have Linux Mint 18.3 automatically login each time. You can change this later.

Linux Mint 18.3 will download some updates from the Internet if you connected your computer to an Interne connection. If not it will begin to load files from the media you created. It took around ten minutes to install Linux Mint rrom USB on my dual core Dell 530 Inspiron with 4 gigabytes of memory.

Once Linux Mint 18.3 installation is finished it will warn you to remove your installation media. Remove your installation media ie. DVD, USB flash drive, etc. and then hit enter. Now Linux Mint 18.3 will boot for the first time.

Depending on how you decided to enter your desktop, you will either see your desktop or have to login with your username and password. Now that you are finished with your installation you deserve to enjoy a mint, a Linux Mint.

5G Cellular Network – Launch Planned by AT&T

American Telephone and Telegraph plans on rolling out America’s first 5G cellular network later this year. Initially twelve cities will have access to this 5G mobile network. AT&T would become the first American corporation to offer 5G service.

Perhaps United States corporations like American Telephone and Telegraph should provide better, more reliable, and faster 4G networks first before venturing off on making a new 5G network. It is well known that other countries provide far faster and superior 4G networks. Anyways, AT&T plans on rolling out their shiny new 5G mobile broadband network in late 2018.

These twelve cities plus an additional thirteen cities allegedly will become the first guinea pigs, er I mean customers:

* Atlanta
* Austin
* Boston
* Bridgeport
* Buffalo
* Chicago
* Fresno
* Greenville
* Hartford
* Houston
* Indianapolis
* Los Angeles
* Louisville
* Memphis
* Nashville
* New Orleans
* Oklahoma City
* Pittsburgh
* San Antonio
* San Diego
* San Francisco
* Tulsa
* Oklahoma
* Sacramento

The above twenty three cities include some that are part of AT&T’s 5G Evolution technology. American Telegraph and Telephone claims that their 5G network will have reduced latency. We shall see if that is hyped up marketing or actually computer networking reality.

Last year AT&T tested 5G in these select cities:

* Austin, Texas
* Waco, Texas
* Kalamazoo, Michigan
* South Bend, Indiana

No word yet on how much this 5G Cellular Network service will cost for an average customer. Also, no word yet on what hardware manufactures will have 5G capable dumb devices, I mean smart devices produced to work with AT&T’s 5G network. Are these 5G mobile broadband services going to include limited or unlimited bandwidth?

Will AT&T start throttling speeds like so many current mobile broadband companies perpetrate?

Nvidia GPU Drivers – No Longer Support 32 Bit X86 Hardware

Nvidia GPU drivers will no longer be developed to support 32 bit x86 hardware. Nvidia Corporation made this announcement on December twenty first two thousand seventeen. Nvidia GPU drivers version 390 will be the last drivers to support x86 32 bit hardware.

This includes the following operating systems.

* microsoft windows 7
* microsoft windows 8
* microsoft windows 8.1
* microsoft windows 10
* linux distributions
* berkeley software disribution

All future Nvidia GPU drivers will not support any x86 32 bit hardware or operating systems. You will not be able to install future Nvidia graphics processing unit drivers on x86 32 bit computers with 32 bit operating systems. You will be able to install older versions up to and including version 390 on 32 bit architecture.

However, future bugs, security issues, and improvements will no longer be developed for 32 bit architecture. Most if not all new laptop and desktops are manufactured with x64 64 bit hardware. This might be a problem if you have an older laptop or desktop computer.

It has been since around 2006 that Intel quit developing new 32 bit processors. Advanced Micro Devices I believe quit developing new 32 bit processors around 2004.

Screen Grab Windows – Program Sharex Version 12

Sharex screen grab windows program is entirely FREE and open source. This software allows you to screen capture what you see displayed on your Microsoft Windows operating system based computer. Version 12 has been released that includes many new features.

Sharex at one time was my primary screen capturing program for my videos I make for my Anet Computers Youtube channel. However, I ran into a problem where this program is not compatible with a 24-bit external sound card I have installed. I still keep this program as a backup, in case my primary screen capturing program has problems.

There are over twenty new features in this screen grab windows program Sharex version 12. There are a few improvements but no bug or security fixes. Sharex is not compatible with Apple Macintosh or Linux operating systems.

This program works on Microsoft Windows 10. Also, there are portable versions of this program in their builds section. Sharex can take screen capture video and audio of your computer desktop. Also, this program screen grab windows program can take screen catpure photographs. In my opinion this program has a lack of documentation and might be cumbersome for beginners.

However, this program works well and when I did use it was quite stable for the most part. This was my primary screen grab windows program for a few years. I would still be using this program if it was compatible with a 24-bit sound card installed on my Microsoft Windows 10 x64 64 bit version desktop computer.

Once you learn how to use this free screen grab windows program, you will be able to make screen capture videos for platforms like Youtube, Dailymotion, Topbuzz, etc.
